"Pittoscultura" is a term coined by Italian artist Enrico Baj to describe a technique that lies halfway between painting and sculpture. It is a two-dimensional artwork, like a painting, but made with three-dimensional elements. The artist applies the medium—in our case, stone or marble—to create a work that possesses both the characteristics of a painting (surface, color, composition) and those of a sculpture (relief, depth, and different materials). The goal of pittoscultura is to break down the barrier between painting and sculpture, exploring the possibility of an art that is neither completely flat nor completely in the round, but rather plays with shadows, light, and the textures of materials to create a more complex and dynamic visual and tactile experience.
